iPhone connects to CarPlay in a car via USB to lightning cable or Bluetooth. It depends on what connectivity features are available in the vehicle. So the reason behind CarPlay not working could be related to Bluetooth connectivity, USB connectivity, or the software itself. Whatever may be the case, we will address every possible reason here.
Reboot your phone:
The first simple fix that you can try is a restart. Most software issues can be fixed with a single restart of most electronic devices. And the iPhone is no exception. You can also try the restart option with the iPhone’s CarPlay not working issue. For this, go to Settings and navigate to General. Then select the option Shut down. Then drag the slider to the right to turn off your smartphone. Now wait 30 seconds and then press the power button on the side to turn on your device again.
Try the next solution if the restart does not help you.
Reset phone settings:
iOS 16 comes with an option to reset all Settings. This will reset all your phone’s settings to their default value, as when you first bought your new iPhone. Performing a settings reset can clear out several conflicts within the Settings menu that might block your iPhone’s CarPlay feature.
Resetting settings will clear out everything from your Settings menu, though. This includes saved WiFi and Bluetooth connections as well. So perform settings reset only if you are willing to delete every saved connection on your iPhone.

To reset settings, open up Settings on your phone and go to General. Then tap on the Transfer or Reset iPhone option. Then select Reset and choose the Reset All Settings option. You will have to confirm your action by tapping on the Reset button on the confirmation page.
After this, your phone will restart on its own. After the restart, try the next solution if you still encounter the same CarPlay issue.
Factory reset your iPhone:
After the settings reset, you can also try the factory reset option. This will clear every bit of data on your phone, though. So you need to create a backup of everything necessary to you and perform the factory reset.
To perform the factory reset, open up Settings on your phone and go to General. Then tap on the Transfer or Reset iPhone option. Then select the Erase All Content and Settings option and the Reset All Settings option. You will have to confirm your action by tapping on the Reset button on the confirmation page.
After the reset, try the next solution if you still encounter the same CarPlay issue.
Check the date and time on your iPhone:
Data and time on any device that has access to the internet need to be precise according to the geographical location. No ISP internet connection works properly if the date and time of the device are not in sync with the actual date and time of the region. Even while connecting your iPhone to your car, if the date and time are not set accurately, it will face some difficulties setting up the connection. So, it would be best if you fixed this.
To set the correct date and time on your iPhone, open up Settings and go to General. Then scroll down and find the option Time & Date. Tap on this and set the correct date and time per your region.
If the CarPlay feature is still not working, try the next solution.
Reconnect Apple CarPlay Connection:
Another fix is that you can try to fix the CarPlay issue by re-establishing the connection between the two devices.
- Open up Settings on your iPhone.
- Go to General.
- Tap on CarPlay.
- Select your car.
- Tap on the Forget this Car option.
- Now, set up the connection again by simply plugging your iPhone into your car via USB or by connecting your car to your phone via Bluetooth.
Try the next solution if reconnection does not solve your problem.
Check Connections:
You will use a USB cable or a Bluetooth connection to sync your CarPlay feature between your car and your phone. If you use a USB connection, ensure the wire is connected correctly at both ends. It would be best if you stuck to using only the original cable for this connection. Furthermore, you should also try using another cable and check whether that solves your problem. You can use a friend’s cable for this.
If the connection works correctly with the other cable, you will have to buy a new one.
For wireless connectivity, you should turn on your Bluetooth and WiFi on your phone. If it is already turned on, turn it off and then after a couple of minutes, turn it on again. Then try reconnecting your phone to the car.
If even this does not solve your problem with Apple CarPlay, try the next solution.
Deactivate USB Restricted Mode:
iPhones come with a USB-restricted mode that blocks any unauthorized person from accessing your iPhone when connected to any system via a USB cable. And depending on the use, the restricted mode feature automatically disconnects the USB connection if the connection is not established correctly.
But having this mode turned on can sometimes work against you in CarPlay. Your iPhone might detect the USB connection between your car and iPhone as a potential threat, which might disconnect the connection from the software side.
It would be best if you disabled the USB restricted mode on your iPhone to prevent this. To turn it off, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open up Settings on your iPhone.
- Go to Devices.
- Then tap on USB Accessories and turn off the toggle for it.
Remember to turn it on when you are done using Carplay, as having this feature turned off makes your device vulnerable to authorized access.
Try the next solution if disabling the USB restricted mode also does not help with your Apple CarPlay issue.
Check your region:
Apple Carplay is not available everywhere. For now, it is available only in some selected countries, and if you don’t live in one of those countries, you cannot use the Apple Carplay feature. For now, it is available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China mainland, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
Why Should You Buy AppleCare+ for Your iPhone 14, 14, 14 Plus, Pro, and 14 Pro Max?
Check if CarPlay is available in your car:
CarPlay is not available on any car that has Bluetooth or USB in it. Only a few brands and their selective lineup of cars come with Carplay. So go through the manual of your car, and check whether there is any information about the availability of Apple CarPlay. If it is not built into your car, you won’t have information about it in your manual.
Update your iOS:
If you are one of those users who installed the latest version of iOS 16 right when it was available, then there is a chance that you are using a buggy build. The first build of a new update is mainly filled with bugs that make the device malfunction in most scenarios.
To address this, Apple will release updates that clear out the bugs in the previous build. So, if you have not updated your iPhone after the initial iOS 16 update, it is time to check for new updates immediately.
To check for a new iOS update, open up Settings on your iPhone and go to General. Then select Software Update, and if there is a pending update, it will show up here. If you see a new pending update, install it on your phone.
After the update, if you still encounter the CarPlay issue, try the next solution.
Turn off low power mode:
The low power mode of your iPhone minimizes the use of resources on your phone to maximize the available battery life. But this can work against you in terms of connectivity. To fix this, you need to disable the low-power mode of your iPhone.
To turn off the Low Power mode, go to the settings app on your smartphone and select battery. Then tap on the toggle next to Low Power Mode to turn it off. Once it is turned off, try using the flashlight again.
If even this does not help you, try the next solution.
Contact Apple Support:
If none of the above solutions worked for you, you could be sure it is a hardware issue. So if your iPhone is under warranty, it might be a good idea to get your camera lens replaced. You must take your iPhone to the nearest service center and ask for help. Inform them about your problem in detail, and they should be able to help you. Just ensure that you take the proper phone documentation to the Apple service center when you go for the repair.
