How to Fix Terraria Lost Connection
Here we’ve managed to provide you a couple of possible solutions that should fix this issue completely. So, without further ado, let’s jump into it.
1. Verify Integrity of Game Files
Make sure to check whether the game files are missing or corrupted or not. Sometimes issues with the installed game files can cause such errors on the Windows PCs. It’s worth mentioning that verifying and repairing the game files can help you to easily fix the integrity of game files. To do so:
Open up Steam > Go to Library.
Right-click on the Terraria game.
Click on Properties > Go to the Local Files tab.
Select Verify Integrity of Game Files…
The verification and repairing process will start automatically. So, wait for it to complete.
Once done, you’ll receive a successful notification.
Now, close the Steam client > Restart your computer to apply changes immediately.
Finally, open Steam, and try running the Terraria game again.
2. Update the Game
It’s also recommended to check for the Terraria game updates directly on the Steam client. There is nothing to say more about it because an outdated game version can always cause several issues with the gameplay or launching or connectivity with the servers. To do so:
- Open the Steam client > Click on Library.
- Now, click on the Terraria game from the left pane.
- Then from the Terraria game page on the client, you can see the Update option if there is an update available at that time.
- Just click on it to update the latest version.
- Once done, you can click on the Play button to start enjoying the game.
3. Create a Journey Character
Make sure to check whether a classic map or you’re trying to join someone’s classic mode game. If so, keep in mind that you should have a classic character for that. If don’t then just create a new journey character for yourself and then try again. This trick should come in handy for you.
4. Disable Antivirus and Windows Firewall
If none of the above methods worked for you, try disabling the antivirus program as well as the Windows Firewall program on your computer temporarily, and then try playing the game again. Sometimes security programs may treat some of the game files or ongoing connections as malware or threat which may lead to errors or even crashes. To do so:
Click on the Start Menu > Type Windows Defender Firewall and click on it from the search results.
Select Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.
From the Customize Settings page, make sure to select the Turn off Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended) option in all the Public, Domain, and Private Networks.
Click on OK to save changes.
Additionally, head over to the Windows Settings menu by pressing the Windows + I keys > Click on Windows Security > Select Virus & threat protection > Click on Manage Settings > Turn Off Real-time Protection temporarily to check for the issue.

- If prompted by UAC, select Yes to proceed.
- Now, copy and paste and hit Enter to get networking details of your computer:
ipconfig /all
- Here you’ll have to note down the IPv4 address, Subnet Mask, Default gateway, and DNS Server addresses to somewhere else which will be required later.
- Next, press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
- Type ncpa.cpl and hit Enter to open Network Connections.
- Right-click on the active networking adapter > Select Properties.
- Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

- Now, make sure to type the P address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers address here that you’ve recently copied from the command prompt.
- Once done, click on OK to save changes.
- Finally, restart your computer to apply changes immediately.
Next, you’re ready to implement the port forwarding feature on your Wi-Fi router logging into the admin dashboard and selecting Port Forwarding or Advanced Wireless. Then enter the IP Address and use both TCP + UDP for your game. You can select 7777 or higher than 5,000 for the start port and end port.
Once done, make sure to select Enable or Turn On the Port Forwarding option. Now, you can try running the Terraria game on your PC and check for the Lost Connection issue.
7. Reinstall the Game
If nothing seems working for you, then you should uninstall and reinstall the Terraria game as a final resort. If there is an issue with the game files or cache data then reinstalling the game properly on your computer should fix the issue completely. To do that:
- Press Windows + I keys to open Windows Settings.
- Now, click on Apps > From the Apps and Features section, scroll down the list of installed programs.
- Click on the Terraria game and select Uninstall.
- If prompted, proceed with the uninstallation process and complete it.
- Once done, make sure to restart your computer, and then open the Steam launcher.
- Reinstall the Terraria game by using the same account that you’ve used earlier.
